So I was just trawling through tumblr and I found a gifset of one of my fave Endless Waltz scenes and I reblogged it before looking at the notes. Upon looking at the notes someone wondered why Heero says, “Roger that,” to Mariemaia telling him to show how truly powerless he is instead of his usual “mission accepted” thing and I have two possibilities I’d like to share because this is what I do (obviously).
First let me give the lowdown of the dialogue in this scene:
Heero: Let me confirm. Your shelter shield’s activated?
Dekim: What are you planning?
Heero: Is your shield activated?
Mariemaia: Of course it is. Admit to yourselves just how powerless you are!
Heero: Roger that.
Heero hits the shield that is protecting the bunker Mariemaia, Dekim, and Relena are in.
Now. Why doesn’t Heero say, “Mission accepted”? I suspect for two reasons:
1.) he’s not on a mission since the war is over, this is entirely personal for him and
2.) Heero is being subtly sassy and is basically saying, “lol okay I’m about to prove you wrong.”
Heero in Endless Waltz is different from Heero at the beginning of the TV series, arguably he’s different from how he is in the TV series anyway since he’s had time to reintegrate into society as just your average teenaged boy. Or somewhat average. He takes it upon himself to rescue Relena, which ends up involving him into something much more deeper than some weirdo kidnapping the Vice Foreign Minister Darlian.
Heero doesn’t waste time answering Dekim’s question of what he’s planning and I suspect if Heero said, “I’m going to blow through your shields,” Dekim would stand there and laugh at him and say, “Yeah, okay no you can’t do that, no one can do that!” Dekim thinks that he’s got everything figured out and now Heero is throwing a wrench in his plans. Heero is talking to Mariemaia instead since she’s the one issuing the threat that he’s powerless. And throughout the series, plenty of people have underestimated Heero (and the other pilots) because they’re teenagers. What can teenagers do? Clearly they are like their predecessors and they have no idea how powerful the Gundams are, or at least Mariemaia has no clue.
Dekim Barton of all people should, and in fact he should be aware of Heero’s potential since he was the one who directed Dr J to train him in the first place. Maybe he deemed Heero a failure and is now underestimating him. “Well he didn’t turn into the perfect soldier I wanted for Operation Meteor, he isn’t much of a threat.” Taking ZERO into account, Heero’s pretty fucking deadly and Dekim Barton is a moron for underestimating him.
The shields work fine against ordinary firepower, so they should hold off a Gundam, right? Here’s the thing about Wing Zero though: it’s overpowered as hell. The twin buster rifle isn’t your standard rifle. One shot is enough to do considerable damage and like anything, all things have weak spots. If you distribute the shots the shield will probably hold. Most people can’t shoot in the exact same place twice–but Heero isn’t “most people”.
Heero tearing their shields apart is basically his “fuck you”. To Dekim. To what he stands for. This is a personal thing, not an official thing. He’s not being given a mission directive. He’s being ordered to show how powerless he is.
Heero isn’t powerless. He’s proving them wrong.
